QotD: Alternate Universe
I never planned to be a software developer, didn’t do a Computer Science degree or anything like it. I fell into computers by accident and it worked out very well, having kept me busy for the last 12 years. But that makes me wonder…
Ignoring qualifications, practical difficulties and everything else, if you could have your choice of careers, what would would you do?
When I was younger, I wanted to be a writer or a graphic designer. I suppose I do some of that now, or have done in the past. I’ve had articles about Macs published and been paid to write online training courses. Years ago I also tried scriptwriting, and while it didn’t get very far, the rejection letters slowly improved. I design my website and all the icons in my products, write the marketing materials, help pages and press releases. I’m writing this blog. I enjoy writing and designing stuff, but I don’t think I’m amazing at either, so maybe it wouldn’t have worked out.
I’d love to direct a film or act in one, make and perform music, be a motoring journalist, race cars, fly a plane and run the country. I suspect I won’t get to do any of those things, but it’s fun to dream.
Whatever I do, being creative is hugely important to me. I’m getting plenty of that right now, so I’m not complaining.

After 28 years of life I still have no idea what I want to do with my life (within reason).
*D&M mode engaged*
I have always liked helping people, whether it’s just giving someone your parking ticket (free) with one hour remaining as you leave a council car park, giving advice on any manner of things, or spending hours or days helping something to be accomplished.
I was reading an article today about the land-mines and explosives in Cambodia. If money was no object in my life I would gladly go and spend months working with the people over there. I love helping the helpless because they deserve it more.
It doesn’t even have to be so hands on – I could fight for rights, etc.
If I’m incredibly honest, I also like the hero factor in helping situations like that. Although it’s selfish, it’s obviously just an added bonus to the Helping thing.
I’d love to do something more practical. Carpentry, building, that sort of thing. But at the same time I need to be excited, entertained and challenged. Hence why I’m still working on the answer 28 years later!
Anyway. I’m waffling terribly now.
I’ll shrup.

Princess Di would have been proud (about the land-mines, not the parking ticket or carpentry, etc)!
Also, thanks for reminding me that you’re almost two years younger than me. On my own blog!
No friend of mine!

I’d do something wih animals (who I find on the whole to be much nicer than some people, and many animals will have a better interaction with you than some humans!), like a vet or a dog behaviourist.
I’d also write a book. I’d love to be a travel journalist, or a travel researcher, or Judith Chalmers but with less orange skin and better hair
(and infinitely younger of course).
Or I’d do something far out and hippy, like be a yoga master or something.
I guess I’d have to choose one and stick to it.

You always hear holiday TV programme presenters say “It’s not all easy, you know! It’s hard work. You have to get up and write scripts and film, etc etc”
Yeah, but you get to do it in the sun, for weeks on end, and you’re paid!!!
