QotD: Alternate Universe

I never planned to be a software developer, didn’t do a Computer Science degree or anything like it. I fell into computers by accident and it worked out very well, having kept me busy for the last 12 years. But that makes me wonder…

Ignoring qualifications, practical difficulties and everything else, if you could have your choice of careers, what would would you do?

When I was younger, I wanted to be a writer or a graphic designer. I suppose I do some of that now, or have done in the past. I’ve had articles about Macs published and been paid to write online training courses. Years ago I also tried scriptwriting, and while it didn’t get very far, the rejection letters slowly improved. I design my website and all the icons in my products, write the marketing materials, help pages and press releases. I’m writing this blog. I enjoy writing and designing stuff, but I don’t think I’m amazing at either, so maybe it wouldn’t have worked out.

I’d love to direct a film or act in one, make and perform music, be a motoring journalist, race cars, fly a plane and run the country. I suspect I won’t get to do any of those things, but it’s fun to dream.

Whatever I do, being creative is hugely important to me. I’m getting plenty of that right now, so I’m not complaining.
