Answers

Why doesn't KIT have subfolders / subgroups?

KIT's groups don't work like folders but more like iTunes playlists, so a file can appear in more than one group at a time.

Why doesn't KIT always appear in the Services menu?

In order for an application to appear in the Services menu when it isn't running, Mac OS X requires that the application in installed in the Applications folder (or a folder therein) and that you either restart or log out and back into your Mac.

How do I apply categories to items in KIT?

You create categories in the Edit Categories panel (Click the Categories button in KIT's toolbar or choose Categories from the View menu to see this panel) and apply them to items using the Category popup menu in the Info drawer (Click the Info button in KIT's toolbar or choose Show Info from the View menu, if the drawer is not visible).

Select the items you want to add to the category and choose the category from the pop-up menu. You can apply categories to multiple items at a time.

How can I move KIT to a clean installation of Mac OS X or a new Mac?

If you intend to perform a clean installation of Mac OS X or another Mac, here's how to move KIT's files.

KIT keeps all its files and preferences in two different locations. However, if you have chosen a custom location for your files in KIT's Library preferences, you should back up that in addition to the Data folder shown below.

  • Data: ~/Library/KIT Files
  • Preferences: ~/Library/Preferences/com.reinvented.KIT.plist

The tilde character ~ denotes your home directory.

Backup these files and folders before you perform the installation and restore them to the same locations once the installation is complete.

Can I drag emails from Mail or events from iCal to KIT?

It is not possible to drag emails from Mail or events from iCal to KIT because neither Mail nor iCal supply any usable data to other applications when dragging emails or events.

You can, however, select all the text of an email in Mail and add it to KIT through the Services menu, cut and paste or by dragging and dropping the text.

Alternatively you could print the email as a PDF to KIT using the "Save PDF to KIT" item in the PDF menu of the print dialog.

Why isn't all the content in a web archive saved?

Some web pages use Javascript to add dynamic content to pages, and this sort of content will not always be saved.

Why can't KIT save a web archive of a particular page? It appears fine in my browser.

Some web pages use Javascript to add content to pages, and sometimes this can prevent KIT from saving the web archive at all. You can work around this problem by disabling Javascript for web archives, even just temporarily before attempting to save the archive:

  • Open KIT's preferences by choosing KIT > Preferences from the menu.
  • Click on Web to show the Web preferences panel.
  • Uncheck "Enable Javascript"

You can then try saving the web archive again. It's OK to re-enable Javascript afterwards.

Why can't I create a link by dragging text from Firefox?

Firefox doesn't provide a link if you select the text of the link you are dragging. Instead, drag the link without selecting the text first.
