User Interface
- Source Lists
- The source list can be switched between Groups and Tags view.
- The Groups source list now has three sections: Library, Groups and Trash.
- New icons for groups.
- Item List
- Columns in the items table will maintain their previous positions after being unhidden.
- Labels are now shown when an item is selected.
- When using the portrait preview, the item list shows 64px thumbnail icons.
- The thumbnails list can be sorted using the pop-up menu in the header.
- QuickLook generators are used to create the thumbnails in the item list. These can be disabled by unchecking "Show Icon Previews" in the View Options panel.
- Preview
- Now offers a choice between landscape and portrait (widescreen) previews.
- The landscape preview works like KIT 1.x with the table of items at the top and preview below.
- The portrait mode shows the item list on the left, the preview on the right.
- Items can now be previewed and edited in the main window or their own tabs.
- When a preview cannot be shown, the file's icon and some file information is shown.
- Tabs
- All items can now be opened for editing or previewing in their own tabs.
- When double-clicked, items can be opened in tabs or their default application, according to the setting in General preferences.
- Tabs can be set to save the items automatically when closed in General preferences.
- Info View
- When using the portrait preview, the info view is shown in a wide format below the preview, with each section separated by tabs.
- When multiple items selected, the total data size is now shown.
- Added a "Where" section to show the groups and folders to which the item belongs, and its original folder in the Finder.
- Select groups or folders in the Where section to see their paths.
- Double-click groups / folders or their paths in the Where section to select them in the Groups source list or the Finder, as appropriate.
- Status Bar
- The new status bar at the bottom of the window allows switching between the Groups and Tags source lists and Landscape and Portrait previews.
- The button to show or hide the Info view has been moved from the
- toolbar to the status bar.
- The Add button now shows a pop-up menu for adding groups, folders or smart groups. You can still option-click to create a smart group.
- Shelf
- The Shelf is a new window that appears as a tab on the side of the screen.
- Drag and drop files, URLs, text, etc to the Shelf. Dragging to the tab opens it automatically.
- Double-click on groups / folders in the Shelf to see their list of items.
- The search field on the Shelf finds items in all groups.
- Double-click items (or press Enter) to open them in Together or their default application (according to preferences).
- Items can also be dragged from the Shelf.
- Use the Quick Note section to enter a plain text note. This is saved automatically when the tab is closed or Library tab selected.
- Hot-keys can be set in Shelf preferences.
- Menus
- Added an Item menu for actions solely concerning items.
- Removed the Group menu and placed the commands in the File menu.
- Moved Empty Trash from the File menu to the Together application menu.
Organize
- Groups
- Groups and folders are now always sorted alphabetically.
- Deleted Items has been renamed to Trash.
- The Trash group is now a folder on disk, so deleted items are removed from the library rather that just move groups and folders are moved intact.
- Recent Imports Group can now from 1 to 100 previous import sessions or can be hidden entirely (the settings can be found in the View Options panel).
- Recent Imports are preserved when the app quits.
- Hidden standard groups maintain their positions when hidden and displayed.
- Start typing a group's name to select it.
- Tag Browser
- New tag browser can be displayed in place of the Groups source list.
- In addition to tags used on items, it will also show "system tags" such as groups, folders, labels and ratings and untagged items.
- Items can be dragged to tags and vice versa.
- Tags can be renamed and removed.
- Tags can be dragged to the tags section of the Info view.
- Multiple tags can be selected and their combined items viewed.
- The Find button in the source list header can be used to filter tags by name, or press Command-F when the tag list has focus.
- Tags can be sorted by name, count or kind using the View Option panel or the tag browser's contextual menu.
- System tags can be hidden using the View Options panel or the tag browser's contextual menu.
- Item counts can be shown or hidden using the View Options panel.
- Folders
- Create folders using the File menu, groups contextual menu or Add button in the status bar.
- Import and export folders by drag and drop or the Import Folders.
- command found in the File menu and New toolbar menu.
- The folders displayed in Together are real folders on disk, not just a representation.
- The original files for items will either be stored in a folder or one of Together's library folders. If the item appears in a folder it is stored there, otherwise it is stored in the appropriate library folder.
- Drag and drop items between a folder and the Library group to move the original file from the folder to the appropriate library.
- Ratings
- Added Ratings menu to File menu, with keyboard shortcuts.
- Ratings can now be applied to items using the contextual menu in the items list.
- Ratings can be applied using keyboard shortcut Command-0 through Command-5.
- Labels
- Categories renamed to Labels.
- Labels can now be applied to items in the list and tabbed items using the Labels button in the toolbar.
- Labels can now be applied to items using the contextual menu in the items list, along with an Edit Labels command.
- Added Labels menu to File menu.
- Labels are now displayed using a gradient fill instead of the outline.
- The label is also drawn on the filename of selected items.
- The Label Editor now has a pop-up list of preset colors and retains the ability to choose a custom color.
- Deleting labels can now be undone.
- Smart Groups
- Smart Groups can now match items by content. Content searching is performed by Spotlight.
- Date Created and Date Modified rules can now be based on relative dates - e.g. "today" or "in the last 1 week".
- Library Manager
- New Library Manager (see using the Together > Library Manager menu command) allows the creation, renaming and deletion of libraries and switching between them.
Search
- Search Bar
- New search bar is shown when something is typed into the Search field in the toolbar and replaces the menu shown in the search field.
- Search bar presents a choice between the currently selected groups / tags and the whole library.
- Use the search bar to choose criteria to search. Any of the selected criteria will be matched.
- Spotlight
- Spotlight is now used for content searching.
Editing and Previews
- Text Documents
- Together now supports the editing of many text format files, including RTF, Word, Open Document, and plain text.
- Text documents can be exported to different formats using the File > Save As menu command.
- Bookmarks
- Bookmarks can now be edited.
- Bookmarks for web pages can also be previewed.
- Web archives can be created from bookmarks using the button in the editing toolbar.
- Web Archives
- Web archives can now be edited by clicking the edit button in the web archive toolbar.
- In editing mode, links are not active.
- When a web archive is created, Together shows the page loading as in a web browser.
- Bookmarks can be created from web archives using the button in the web archive toolbar.
- HTML Documents
- Can be made editable using the preview's contextual menu.
- PDF Documents
- PDF documents now have their own toolbar for switching between different layout modes and navigating through the document.
- Quick Look Previews
- For formats that Together does not natively support, it will attempt to generate a Quick Look preview, provided you have an appropriate generator for the file on your system.
Slideshows
- Can now show slideshow for a particular group using the Slideshow command in the View menu.
- A slideshow of selected items only can be started by holding on the Option key and choosing the same menu command.
Data Management
- Import and Export
- Files can now be moved into Together. The files are copied and, if successful, the originals removed.
- Files are now imported in the background and imports queued.
- A new Activity window shows import job progress and any alerts. The progress and status of imports is shown next to the target group or folder.
- Groups can now be exported using drag and drop.
- Encryption
- Items can be encrypted using the Encrypt toolbar item, Item menu commands or item list contextual menu commands.
- Once encrypted, a password is always required to decrypt the files.
- Items can also be viewed temporarily. Deselecting the item, or closing the tab that is displaying the viewed item (whichever occurs last) will save changes and re-encrypt the file.
- A lock icon is shown next the the encrypted item's filename in the item list and in tabs when the item is encrypted, including when it is being viewed.
- The encryption password can be stored in the keychain, but will not be retrieved to decrypt or view items.
- Warning: There is no facility for recovering encrypted files should the password be forgotten.
- The encryption used is AES-256.
- Performance
- Together now uses Core Data for its database for improved performance and reliability and should be able to handle thousands of items with ease.
- Updates to smart groups now occur in separate threads.
- Performance improvements when resolving aliases for linked item in Together.
- Legacy
- Together uses an entirely new data format, so KIT data must be imported. Together will offer to import the existing KIT library on first run.
- KIT Libraries can be imported via "Import KIT Library" in the File menu.
- When importing from KIT, files are copied and the original library can be moved to the Trash following a successful import.
Misc
- Includes a QuickLook generator for Together Notes.
- New application icon at up to 512px.
